재료와 구조에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 현대인을 매혹하는 인더스트리얼적 디자인을 가장 영리하게 재해석해 풀어 놓는 런던의 영 디자이너 벤자민 허버트. 올해 브리티시 디자인 어워드의 가장 유력한 디자이너 후보로 주목 받고 있다.

1. 나는 당신의 디자인이 최신 디자인 트렌드를 반영하는 가장 좋은 기준, 혹은 앞으로의 디자인에 대한 가장 이상적인 롤모델이라고 생각한다. 당신의 디자인에 있어 가장 핵심은 무엇인가?

H. 우리는 재료에서부터 디자인을 끌어내는 것을 좋아한다. 우리에게 영감을 주거나 신나게 만드는 것들은 대부분 재료나 일하는 방식으로부터 온다. 우리는 언제나 공장을 방문하거나 물건을 직접 만드는 사람들과의 대화하는 것에서부터 작업을 시작한다. 그들은 우리에게 재료의 잠재력을 어떻게 끌어낼지에 대한 통찰력을 주는 사람들이다. 우리는 또한 기능성과 영속성을 위해 디자인의 유용함에 집중한다.

2. 사실, 난 당신의 사랑스러운 의자 ‘포드(Pod)’에서 볼 수 있듯 최신 디자인들에서 관찰 가능한 매우 프라이빗하면서도 사랑스러운 무드에 관심 있다. 어떤 의미에서 그들은 로낭&에르완 부를렉 형제가 비트라를 위해 선보인 디자인들을 떠올리게 만드는 것 같다. 이 새로운 트렌드에 대해 설명해줄 수 있나?

H. 나는 다른 디자이너들이 무얼 하는지에 대해서는 그다지 관심이 없다. 다만 상업 공간들이 좀 더 오픈된 공간 구성을 선호하게 되면서 프라이빗 체어들의 사용이 점점 더 빈번해지고 있다. 그래서 그들은 사람들에게 그들이 살아갈 만한 작은 세상을 제공한다. ‘포드’의 경우, 우리는 재료와 어쿠스틱의 한계를 극복하는 것에서부터 시작했다. 그 의자의 모양은 자연스럽게 펠트를 압축하는 과정에서 나온 것이다.

3. ‘포드’와 관련된 다른 인터뷰에서 당신이 인더스트리얼 디테일에 대해 언급했던 걸 본 적이 있다. 좀 더 자세히 설명해줄 수 있나?

H. 인더스트리얼 디테일들은 그 의자의 지속 가능한 구조에 대한 감각을 부각시키는 역할을 한다. 그 프로젝트는 커다란 업홀스터리 의자들에 대한 대안을 찾기 위한 것이었다. 그것은 미니멀한 재료, 운반성이 좋은 퀄리티와 낮은 카본의 사용에 대한 것이었다.

4. 나는 또한 당신의 엄청나게 다양한 조명 컬렉션에 크게 감명 받았다. 당신의 그 대단한 창조력에 무슨 비밀이라도 있나? 디자인할 때 크게 영감 받는 원천 같은 게 있나?

H. 나는 우리가 재료 선택을 첫 스타팅 포인트로 삼기 때문에, 일에 대해 굉장히 폭넓은 다양성을 지닐 수 있다고 생각한다. 그래서 아무래도 그 영향이 클 거다. 우리는 또한 우리의 모든 프로젝트에 해당되는 매우 강한 디자인 언어를 보유하고 있다. 우리는 지금 가구에 좀 더 집중하고 있지만, 조명에서부터 시작했던 것은 좀 더 인더스트리얼적 배경을 지녔다는 의미에서 좋은 시작이었다.

5. 앞으로 사람들을 매혹시킬 디자인에 대한 생각은 무엇이라고 생각하나?

H. 지속 가능한(Sustainable), 기능적인(Functional), 촉각적인(Tactile)

6. 현재 준비하고 있는 프로젝트는 무엇인가?

H. 다음 프로젝트는 드 라 에스파다(De La Espada)를 위한 가구 컬렉션이다. 그것은 크래프트, 하이 퀄리티, 원자재로부터 오는 구조에 초점이 맞춰져 있다.

1. I noticed that your design is the best model that represents current design trend or the way next design is supposed to be. Can you explain what the essence is in your design?

H. We operate a material driven design approach.. Where a lot of our inspiration and excitement comes from the materials and processes we work with. We always start projects by visiting factories and talking to people who make things to give us an insight into how we might push the potential of the material. We Also focus on usability to create projects that are functional and timeless.

2. Actually, I'm very much interested in the very private mood of the latest design like your adorable chair ‘Pod’. And in some way, the design trend reminds me of the design of Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec. It seems very private and also shaped lovely. Can you explain about this new trend? Which elements of design and circumstance combined together and made this new trend?

H. Im not so interested in what other designers are doing. Privacy chairs have become more popular as commercial spaces become more open plan. So they give you your own little world to live in. We started the project from the material and process of creating an acoustic barrier ? the shapes were lead by the process of pressing felt.

3. I also remember that you mentioned about industrial details when you took an interview about ‘Pod’(I saw it at the website of de vorm). Could you explain this more?

H. The industrial details are exposed to give a sense of the knock down sustainable construction of the chair. The project focused on creating a sustainable alternative to large upholstered chairs ? with minimal material, good transportation qualities and a low carbon footprint.

4. Actually, Dutch brand 'de vorm' is not very familiar to us. Can you tell us a little bit about the brand?

H. HI, Please email them they can give you a great overview of the company.

5. I also got a big impression by a variety of collections of your lighting. What is the secret of your enormous creativity? What makes you inspired mostly?

H. I think there is variety in the work because we take materials as our starting point ? so the outcome might be broader. But we also have a strong design language that runs through all our projects. We now concentrate on furniture ? but started in lighting as it was a good progression from an industrial design background.

6. Do you have any idea for that which design might make people fascinated in the near future?

H. Sustainable, Functional, Tactile

7. Could you tell us your next project in process? Or which makes you excited these days?

H. The next project launch is a collection of furniture for dela espada ? please email them they will give you a great overview. It focuses on craft, high quality and construction of raw material.
